Goethegymnasium Weißenfels is a grammar school in Weißenfels, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Its history dates back to the 17th century, when Duke August of Saxe-Weißenfels founded the Gymnasium illustre Augusteum. Today's Goethe Gymnasium, which has existed under various types of schools since the decline of this institution in 1794, has existed in its current form since 1991.
On 1 November 1664, Duke August von Weißenfels founded the Gymnasium illustre Augusteum in the former St. Claren monastery next to the core building of today's grammar school. It was a higher private school for noble boys who were to be trained as civil servants. Anyone who wanted to enter the service of the duchy had to have visited the Augusteum for at least two years. In addition, a printing house was also operated there, which produced ducal mandates, commemorative publications and final theses of the students.
