With its sculptures and reliefs, the Leuna Sculpture Park is a unique testimony to the visual art of the 1950s and 1960s in the GDR. As the only larger green space, it is of great importance for the garden city of Leuna and is groundbreaking for the maintenance and development of urban open spaces.
The park was created in 1922 in connection with the construction of the Leuna garden city as a Saale park. During the Second World War, there was an anti-aircraft position there and potatoes were grown on the site until the first post-war years. Under the direction of garden architect Franz Mengel, the facilities were then redesigned.
