Germerode Abbey is a former Premonstratensian convent for canonesses located in the district of Germerode in the municipality of Meißner in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse, at the foot of the Hoher Meißner, 13 km from Eschwege. With its Romanesque abbey church from the 12th century, which follows the model of the abbey church of Lippoldsberg, it is considered a significant example of late Romanesque monastic architecture in the vicinity.
Established as the house monastery of the Counts of Bilstein, Germerode Abbey was founded in 1144/45 by Count Rugger II of Bilstein as a regulated double foundation for canons and canonesses from the lower nobility, and was transferred to the newly established Order of Premonstratensians. The church was built between 1150 and 1170 during the reign of Count Otto I of Bilstein. The double monastery existed for about 100 years; afterwards, Germerode continued as a purely conventual monastery.
