The Würgassen nuclear power plant is located in the Würgassen district of the town of Beverungen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia on the Weser River.
The plant had one boiling water reactor. In 1992, during major maintenance, it was discovered that there were cracks in the casing of the reactor core. In 1994, at the request of the operator himself, the reactor was shut down and the plant was closed. The first phase of decommissioning lasted from 1994 to 2010 at a cost of EUR 1 billion. In 2015, there were still a number of outbuildings of the plant, which are themselves radioactively contaminated, and therefore have to be treated as radioactive waste when demolished. Further demolition and remediation is expected to be completed by 2028. The owner Preussenelektra Kernkraft was later merged into E.ON.
