The hospital, also known as the Hospital of the Holy Spirit or Heiliggeistspital, is a complex with a large, green inner courtyard located at the northern marketplace in Schwäbisch Gmünd. It served to care for the elderly, those in need of care, and the sick, and today it still houses a nursing home and "assisted living". Until its dissolution in 1984, the hospital was considered the oldest existing hospital in Germany. The Gmünder Hospital Foundation has existed since 1269 to this day.
The founding of the hospital is dated to just before 1269, as the hospital brothers received permission from Bishop Hartmann of Augsburg on June 8 of that year to build a chapel on their property. On January 1, 1269, the hospital foundation was already established. This foundation, recognized as non-profit since 1954, continues to exist today. The statutes of the Gmünder Hospital Foundation aim to "promote and support institutions for the elderly, the sick, and the needy" and thus aligns with the tradition of the medieval foundation purpose.
