The abandoned castle Sassenberg was a regional castle of the prince-bishopric of Münster in Sassenberg in the district of Warendorf in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was later converted into a palace. Large parts were demolished in the 19th century, while others were used commercially.
In the area of the castle grounds, remnants of a motte-and-bailey castle existed, indicating a high age of the structure. The motte was still visible into modern times. However, the early history until the 14th century remains largely in the dark. According to historians from the 16th century, a hill fort was said to have been constructed by Lothar of Süpplingenburg on the occasion of his military campaign against Bishop Burchard of Münster in 1121. Afterwards, Lothar is said to have handed the castle over to Bernhard I of Lippe. It is also unverified that after the defeat of Henry the Lion and his supporter Bernhard II of Lippe, the castle came to Münster.
