The Eschwege station, today also known as the Stadtbahnhof, was first opened in 1875 west of the center of the city of the same name and was reopened in 2009 after its operation had been temporarily suspended.
The Eschwege station and the connecting line were inaugurated on October 31, 1875, along with the section Bebra – Eschwege West of the railway line Göttingen–Bebra as a branch line. At that time, the construction of the railway line Leinefelde–Treysa, a part of the Cannons Railway, was already planned. Its section between Eschwege station and Leinefelde was opened on May 15, 1880. Thus, Eschwege station changed from a terminal to a through station.
