The Margelkuhle in Belm is today a natural monument on the northeastern edge of Alt-Belm, Belm, Osnabrück district, located in the area of the former Astrup Castle. It is located on Schlossstraße in a forest area of about 2 hectares and occupies 80 to 90% of its area.
The area belongs to the Osnabrück hill country. The rock layers that come to light in this pit can be assigned to the Tertiary in geological terms. Marl rocks with remains of various calcareous and sandy rocks can be found there, which can be assigned to the Oligocene. Marl is an important raw material for cement production and was also used in the past to improve the soil of drained wetlands.
