The Schelenburg in Schledehausen is a moated castle and is one of the oldest castles in the Osnabrück area in Lower Saxony.
The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1160, but is estimated to date back to the 11th century. Its oldest part is the Gothic residential tower from the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, it was surrounded by water all around and could only be reached via a ladder to the first floor. In 1578, a chapel room in the tower is mentioned. The 1st floor served as a Protestant church between 1650 and 1803. In the course of this, the floor of the 2nd floor was removed in the 18th century and galleries were installed instead. In the 19th century, this measure was reversed, a new floor was installed and partition walls were added on the 1st floor.
