The shipyard was founded in 1850 by Heinrich Christian Brand in Edewecht and was run as a family business until its insolvency in 1995. In 1853, the shipyard was moved to Oldenburg, where Brand took over an existing shipyard. The shipyard area was initially located "Am Stau" on the left bank of the Hunte, slightly above the present-day railway bridge. In 1917, the shipyard was relocated a little further downstream to the other side of the Hunte. From then on, the new ships were built from steel instead of wood.
