Il cantiere navale fu fondato nel 1850 da Heinrich Christian Brand a Edewecht e fino al fallimento nel 1995 fu gestito come un'impresa di famiglia. Nel 1853 il cantiere navale fu trasferito a Oldenburg, dove Brand assunse un cantiere esistente. L'area del cantiere si trovava inizialmente "Am Stau" sulla riva sinistra dell'Hunte, un po' sopra l'attuale ponte ferroviario. Nel 1917 il cantiere fu spostato un po' più a valle sull'altro lato dell'Hunte. Le nuove costruzioni navali furono da allora realizzate in acciaio anziché in legno.
