Le chantier naval a été fondé en 1850 par Heinrich Christian Brand à Edewecht et a été géré en tant qu'entreprise familiale jusqu'à sa faillite en 1995. En 1853, le chantier naval a été transféré à Oldenburg, où Brand a repris un chantier naval existant. Le site du chantier naval était initialement situé "Am Stau" sur la rive gauche de la Hunte, un peu en amont du pont ferroviaire actuel. En 1917, le chantier naval a été déplacé un peu plus en aval de l'autre côté de la Hunte. Les nouveaux bâtiments navals ont alors été construits en acier plutôt qu'en bois.
