The Geislede is fed by two source arms: the Gieselbach, which springs up at about 420 m height near Heuthen, and the Ebra coming from Kreuzebra. After their confluence, it flows westward towards Geisleden and then northwest towards Heilbad Heiligenstadt. The course of the Geislede enters the urban area of Heilbad Heiligenstadt from the southeast and discharges into the Leine at Sperberwiese.
The Geislede flows through the historic old town of Heiligenstadt from east to west and powered up to six mills there, of which the Herrenmühle and the Klausmühle have been preserved. In the urban area, the watercourse has been heavily canalized and partially built over with structures like the Jesuit college.
