The Krümmel dynamite factory was the first explosives factory of Alfred Nobel outside Sweden and was established in 1865 east of Geesthacht in Krümmel. Until its occupation by the Allies in 1945, explosives for civilian and military use were produced here. The plant, along with the Düneberg powder factory located west of Geesthacht, was long considered Germany's powder chamber. After the end of World War II, the factory was shut down and dismantled for reparations. Since 1956, parts of the former factory site have hosted, among others, the Helmholtz Research Center Geesthacht and since 1983, the Krümmel Nuclear Power Plant.
After Alfred Nobel founded the company "Alfred Nobel & Co." in Hamburg on June 20, 1865, he searched for a suitable place to establish an explosives factory to produce nitroglycerin. On October 10, 1865, Nobel finally acquired an approximately 42-hectare site near the town of Geesthacht, which bore the name Der Krümmel and seemed particularly suitable to him due to the hilly terrain, sparse population, and proximity to the Elbe River.
