Karl May was born here in Hohenstein-Ernstthal on February 25, 1842 , the fifth child of the weaver Heinrich May and his wife Wilhelmina Weise. Shortly after his birth he became blind due to vitamin deficiency. Nine of the thirteen other children in the family died at a young age. During his blind childhood, his grandmother told him many fairy tales , which made his imagination develop. At the age of four or five he was given the right foods ( vitamin A & D ) after medical examination, after which he could see. Karl May later became the famous German writer who became known worldwide for his stories about Winnetou and Old Shatterhand in the Wild West .
