Maria-Josepha Tower is the name of a 30-meter high iron observation tower on the 483.2-meter high Totenstein in Grüna near Chemnitz in Saxony.
The Totenstein is the highest elevation of the Rabenstein Ridge. In the mid-19th century, the tree cover on the summit plateau was cleared, providing a comprehensive view. The Erzgebirge branch associations of Limbach and Rabenstein had an observation tower built in 1886, which was fabricated by the blacksmith Viktor Ludwig from Grüna. The inauguration of the tower, which cost 3,250 marks, took place on October 4, 1886. With a height of 22 meters, it offered a comprehensive panoramic view, which, under appropriate weather conditions, extended southward to the distinctive mountains of the Ore Mountain ridge and northward to Rochlitz Mountain and the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. The tower was named after Maria Josepha of Saxony. The daughter of Prince Georg of Saxony married Archduke Otto Franz Joseph of Austria in 1886. Prince Georg was the protector of the Erzgebirge Association in 1886. During the summer months, guests were provided with gastronomic services below the tower, making it a popular excursion destination.
