Einstein's House is a chalet built in 1929 in Caputh, 6 km south of Potsdam. Between 1929 and 1932, this second house was occupied by Albert Einstein, his second wife Elsa and his two daughters-in-law. Designed as a summer retreat on the edge of a lake, the Einsteins lived there year-round. On the occasion of the "Einstein Year", the building has been restored since May 2005 to accommodate tourists and host exhibitions.
It was at the suggestion of the first mayor of Berlin, Gustav Böß, that the city of Berlin decided to offer Albert Einstein, for the 50 years of the illustrious physicist, a house on a lake, with a boom. So the city first offered him a choice of a dozen houses, but Einstein refused them, either because they were poorly located or because he did not agree with the owner's conditions. No valid house could be found, so it was decided to offer Einstein a plot of land so that he could build a house that suited him; But the case turned out to be more complicated than expected. After a press campaign about the "Berlin City Fails Gift Scandal", the debate in the Berlin Regional Council escalated and Einstein decided to give up for good; Even a letter from the high mayor did not change his mind. The Einsteins eventually found land for sale at 7 Waldstrasse in Caputh, and Einstein had the house built at his own expense.
