Bundeswehr Operations Command

The Bundeswehr Operations Command in Geltow near Potsdam is a higher command authority that is directly subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Defence and, since 1 April 2012, has been directly subordinate to the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr and plans and conducts all foreign missions of the Bundeswehr militarily.
All deployments of German armed forces – whether on a national or multinational scale – are generally planned and led by the Operations Command. The term "planning" means that the military mission and the forces and means required for it are coordinated. Behind the term "leadership" stands above all the uniform responsibility for the personnel and the material in the respective area of operation. The Operations Command is thus the operational command level of the Bundeswehr and is the only office to issue national instructions to the leaders of the contingents in the areas of operation. These usually receive their orders from multinational headquarters. The Operations Command ensures that the deployment of German forces is carried out in accordance with the mandate and does not violate the legal norms of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Commander of the Bundeswehr Operations Command shall be responsible to the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr for the command of the operational forces under his authority.
