Lustgarten

The Lustgarten is the oldest park in Potsdam. It was created around 1660 during the reign of Frederick William of Brandenburg. The park in the city of Cleves, which attracted many visitors due to its combination of park and castle, served as an example. The Lustgarten itself became part of the new combination of Stadtschloss, Alter Markt and the banks of the Havel. It stretched from the south side of the Stadtschloss to the Havel. Avenues lined with trees had been laid out in the park. In addition, a special pond was constructed containing statues of Neptune, among others.
Around 1720, King Frederick William I ordered a large part of the Lustgarten to be turned into an exercise and parade ground for the soldiers of the Prussian army. The Lustgarten did not take its final form until 1829. The famous landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné made the design for this. After this, the Lustgarten remained almost unchanged until the end of the Second World War.
