The Pöhlde hill fort, also referred to as King Heinrich's Bird Nest according to a legend, is an ancient fortification on the Rotenberg near Pöhlde. It was divided into a larger outer and a smaller main fortress. According to archaeological investigations, it was a fortification that sporadically served as a refuge in the 9th to 12th centuries.
The hill fort, which is now covered by forest, is located on the ridge of the Rotenberg about 500 meters south of the center of Pöhlde. Old ground reliefs of hollow paths lead from the site towards Pöhlde, suggesting an earlier connection between the town and the fort. The location on the Rotenberg was suitable for a fortification since the northern slope falls steeply towards Pöhlde, thus requiring less fortification. The southern side was built stronger, as there was only a depression intersected by a stream as a boundary.
