Versen is a place in the German municipality of Meppen, in the state of Lower Saxony. The village is located on the Ems River (German: Ems). The old trade route on the western bank of the Ems, the Friesische Straße, runs through Versen. In 854, the village is first mentioned as fersne in a deed. Versen became known due to the discovery of the bog body called Roter Franz in 1900. This bog body has long been regarded as the best preserved. It is estimated to date from 252 to 388 AD.
During National Socialism, from the summer of 1938, just outside Versen was the prisoner camp Meppen-Versen, one of the 15 Emslandlager. On the site of the former camp, there is now a prison.
