The Borkener Paradise is located just across the German border near Emmen, by the city of Meppen. It is a relatively small reserve with a river dune landscape situated in a meander of the Ems River. The area has been grazed by cattle and horses for centuries and offers a mix of open grassland, drifting dunes, thickets, and patches of closed oak forest. It thus forms one of the few preserved examples of a woodland pasture, or Hudewald. The oak trees, grown in an open environment, have short trunks, broad crowns, and irregular shapes.
