The asymmetrical complex on an irregular ground plan was built between 1899 and 1900 according to a design by the architect Friedrich Pützer in a formerly spacious forest park for the cloth manufacturer Martin Classen, which is why it was initially called Burghaus Classen. In 1920, Hubert Etschenberg bought the house, now commonly referred to as Haus Ficht, and used it as a rental property. Just five years later, it was acquired by Emil Brauer senior, founder and owner of the Aachen umbrella factory Brauer, who had it thoroughly renovated by the architects Josef Bachmann and Alexander Lürken, who subsequently designed his factory building in Jülicher Straße.
