Frensdorfer Haar lock

The Frensdorfer Haar lock, also known as the "border lock", was put into service in 1905. It is located on the Nordhorn-Almelo Canal and is therefore part of the canal network on the left bank of the Ems. It is the only lock on the German side. Since the water level of the canal on the Nordhorn side corresponds to that of the Vecht and therefore varies, the lock is equipped with a double pair of stem gates on both sides. Thus, the water level on the east side can be kept higher or lower. In addition, it prevents the water from flowing back and forth in the canal. Because parts of the canal on the Dutch side were filled in after the closure of the canal in 1965, the lock now has no function and the water is at the same level on both sides. The lock is 62 meters long and the maximum passage width is 6.50 meters. Due to the oval shape, two barges could be smuggled at the same time.
