St. Michael's Church is one of the missions in Suderwick, Germany, that were established along the eastern border of the Netherlands and Germany during the Reformation to support Catholics in the Netherlands.
During the Reformation, the Roman Catholic parish in Dinxperlo was dissolved. The bishop of Münster, Christoph Bernhard von Galen, had chapels built along the German border around 1676 "to remedy the pitiful ignorance of the faithful". The Jesuit priest vicar Ernst Ignatz Busch had great merit in the establishment of the Hemden refugee chapel. In 1675, Bishop von Galen had given him the task of establishing churches and schools throughout the Ambt of Bocholt. In 1681 a Roman Catholic parish was founded in Suderwick and a chapel was built right next to the border, so that the Catholics from Dinxperlo could also worship there.
