Description

The Burlo-Vardingholter Venn und Entenschlatt is a 148 ha nature conservation area and an approx. 100 ha FFH area in the areas of the towns of Borken and Rhede in the district of Borken. It bears the identifier BOR-001 or 4006-301.
The Burlo-Vardingholter Venn is a nationally significant raised bog remnant in which the moor is regenerating in numerous gorges and former peat cuttings, some of them over a large area. Today, it is once again home to all the stages of development typical of raised bogs, including the transitional forms to fens, making it one of the most important moors in the Westmünsterland. It lies directly on the state border with the Netherlands and is thus part of the former moor belt, which formed a natural border between the two states and linguistic areas from the Lower Rhine to the Emsland. It got its name from the neighbouring villages of Burlo and Vardingholt. After the neighbouring Burlo monastery Mariengarden, it is also known as Klostervenn. On the Gelderland side, the nature reserve continues without interruption with the 67-hectare Wooldse Veen.
