About three kilometers from Ilsenburg you come across a steep and almost vertically sloping granite rock against Ilsestein. rises the legendary Ilsestein on the valley Ilse. This steep granite rock is very popular as a hiking destination and easy to reach from the valley of the river Ilse. From the Ilsestein you have a fantastic view of the Brocken massif, the Ilse valley and the surrounding mountains, the town of Ilsenburg, as well as large parts of the northern Harz Mountains.
In the Middle Ages there was a castle that offered the German Emperors protection to the surrounding Royal Forest and the nearby monastery in Ilsenburg. By order of the Pope, the fortress was stormed and destroyed in 1107.
At the top of the 474 m high rock is a large cast-iron cross. In 1814 Anton, Graf zu Stolberg-Wernigerode, had the cross placed in memory of his friends and acquaintances, who had fallen in the liberation wars in the years 1813-1814. With some difficulty you can climb to this Cross and take a look at the 150-meter-deep valley of the Ilse, as well as various other striking sights.
