The St. Catherine's Church in Braunschweig was built in the early 13th century as the parish church of the district of Hagen. The Evangelical Lutheran church, established in 1528, dominates the east side of the Hagen market. The main patroness is Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose attributes – sword, wheel, and crown – are reflected in the wheel of the Hagen coat of arms.
The Romanesque founding structure, which likely dates back to a foundation by Duke Henry the Lion, was begun between 1200 and 1205 closely aligned with the Braunschweig Cathedral and the St. Martin's Church in the old town as a pillar basilica. With the town charter, the Jura et libertates Indaginis from the year 1227, the citizens of Hagen received the right to choose the pastor of St. Catherine's. The reconstruction into a Gothic hall church began in the second half of the 13th century, as indicated by a papal indulgence from 1252. During this process, the side aisles were expanded by double and vaulted to the height of the main nave. The westwork and the south tower were completed in 1379, while the north tower remained unfinished due to the abolition of indulgences as a result of the Reformation. The south tower has a height of 82.18 m, and the north tower has a height of 74.08 m, with 2.58 m each for the weather vane from the center of the finial. Thus, St. Catherine's is the second tallest church building in Braunschweig after St. Andrew's.
