The Siemens AG facility in Braunschweig traces its origins back to the railway signal construction company Max Jüdel & Co, founded in 1873. It is the largest location for railway automation in the world and belongs to the Siemens Mobility business unit of Siemens AG. The operation is located on Ackerstraße at the back of the main train station in the district of Viewegs Garten-Bebelhof.
The railway has a long tradition in Braunschweig, as the Duchy of Brunswick State Railway, the first state railway in Germany, opened the line between Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel on December 1, 1838.
