Tankumsee is an artificially created lake in Isenbüttel in the district of Gifhorn near Gifhorn. It was created around 1970 as a quarry pond during the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal and was inaugurated as a bathing lake in 1976. Since then, a local recreation area with holiday homes has been established around the lake, which has also established a residential area.
The term Tankum is an old field name that the agricultural area bore before the creation of the lake area. It is assumed that Tankum is based on the pre-Germanic language root Tank/Tang, which stands for algae mass. In the course of language development, however, this also meant moor or moor water. The word part um in Tankum could be traced back to a faded pre-Germanic word, which also meant moor. Since the lake is located in the Barnbruch wetland, the development of the name is understandable due to the once swampy location.
