The building was built in 1562 as the town hall of the city of Gifhorn. In order to impress travellers and traders on the highways leading through Gifhorn, it was decorated with magnificent wood carvings.
On the upper floor were the offices and a banqueting hall, on the ground floor the Ratskeller, sometimes also called Ratskrug. At that time, it was leased to the highest bidder for a few years at a time. The house was sold in 1843. Since then, the restaurant has been managed by changing owners.
