The lake on the edge of the district of Stüde was created in 1971 during the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal as a quarry pond and was converted into a bathing lake. Today, the Bernsteinsee is a local recreation area and holiday resort. It is located about 15 kilometers from the cities of Gifhorn and Wolfsburg.
The 9.5-hectare and up to 16-metre-deep Bernsteinsee is located near Stüde directly on the Elbe Lateral Canal in a forest, heath and moor landscape on the eastern edge of the Great Moor. The lake has no tributaries and has a large bathing beach consisting of fine-grained white sand. The water quality is described as "excellent". The lake water shimmers turquoise because of the sandy subsoil. There is a glider airfield in the vicinity of the lake. About twelve kilometres south near Gifhorn, also on the Elbe Lateral Canal, is the Tankumsee in Isenbüttel, which is six times larger. It was also created in the course of the canal construction and also developed into a local recreation area.
