St. Bernward

The Church of St. Bernward is a Catholic church named after Bernward of Hildesheim, located in the Wolfsburg district of Alt-Wolfsburg, and was built from 1963 to 1965. The church, situated at Schulenburgallee 3, is a filial church of the parish of St. Christophorus in the deanery of Wolfsburg-Helmstedt in the Diocese of Hildesheim.
In the sparsely populated northern part of Wolfsburg, extensive construction activities began in 1958, initially with the establishment of the districts of Tiergartenbreite and Teichbreite, followed by Kreuzheide a few years later. Already in January 1961, a nun settled in an apartment on Bartenslebenring, and she began her pastoral work with home visits to Catholic families. Just four weeks later, the first Holy Mass was celebrated in a classroom of the Alt-Wolfsburg primary school by the pastor of St. Christophorus Church, Antonius Holling. Later, various chaplains held services there. By 1962, around 1,000 Catholics lived in the northern districts of Wolfsburg, and by the following year, their number had already risen to about 1,600.
