Bickelstein

The Bickelstein is a 2.5-metre-long and 1.2-metre-high boulder made of potash feldspar granite, which bears horseshoe- and cross-like markings. It lies in the Bickelsteiner Heide, a forest area between Ehra-Lessien and Boitzenhagen in the east of Lower Saxony. The stone is one of the most famous erratic boulders in the Wolfsburg-Gifhorn area and is the landmark of the municipality of Ehra-Lessien. However, the largest erratic boulder in the district of Gifhorn is the "Gifhorner Boulder" erected on the banks of the Ise.
The chair-shaped boulder was transported by glaciers from Scandinavia to northern Germany during the Ice Age in the Pleistocene. It lies in a forest clearing about 200 metres east of the state road 288 between Ehra-Lessien and Boitzenhagen, about four kilometres north-northeast of Ehra at about 94 metres above sea level. The way there is signposted. The stone gave its name to the Bickelsteiner Heide between Ehra-Lessien, Boitzenhagen, Wiswedel and Voitze. The heathland was only reforested with pine trees in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the past, the Bickelstein was probably located in somewhat more open terrain with oaks and juniper.
