The Cuxhaven coastal heaths are located in the districts of Altenwalde, Berensch-Arensch, Duhnen, Holte-Spangen, Oxstedt and Sahlenburg in the city of Cuxhaven in the district of Cuxhaven. They belong to the natural region of Stader Geest and form the transition area from the Geest to the Wadden Sea.
The coastal heaths, consisting of one larger and three smaller sections, were declared a nature reserve on 31 May 1983 by the former district government of Lüneburg.
