The river, which is about nine kilometres long, is part of the Elbe river system and is of shallow depth. It has its source in Westerende, flows through the village in an easterly direction and flows - after it has absorbed numerous weathers - into the Medem near Kathusen. After another 17 kilometres, this in turn flows into the Lower Elbe together with the Elbe-Weser shipping route near Otterndorf.
