The Steinkimmen transmitter is a basic network transmitter of North German Broadcasting located in Steinkimmen, a district of Ganderkesee. The transmission facility is used for broadcasting radio programs on ultra-shortwave as well as digital television in the DVB-T2 HD standard.
On August 6, 1956, the current landmark of Steinkimmen went on air for the then only television program in West Germany for the first time. A 298 m high guyed steel pipe mast served as the transmission mast, which was the tallest structure in the Federal Republic at the time of its construction in 1956. Through the basic network transmitter Steinkimmen, North German Broadcasting supplied the Bremen/Oldenburg area with television in the so-called VHF band. Even then, the pipe mast, with a diameter of two meters and a height of 267 meters, was clearly visible from afar. Added to that was a lattice attachment of 31 meters. The Steinkimmen transmitter measured a total height of 298 meters, only two meters less than the 300-meter-high Eiffel Tower in Paris. At that time, the mast was not only the tallest structure in the Federal Republic but also the fourth tallest in Europe. The facility was operated only five hours a day, as there was television programming at that time only from 4:30 PM to 5:40 PM and from 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM. After that, a test pattern was broadcast until midnight, and the transmitter was then switched off overnight. In September 1956, the dissemination of the first radio programs was added.
