Description

The Haven Höövt Vegesack was a city district with a shopping center on the former grounds of the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen-Vegesack, located between the Vegesacker Hafen and the Vegesack train station as well as the high-rise residential complex Grohner Düne.

From 1618 to 1623, the Vegesacker Hafen was built as Germany's first artificial river harbor following a decision by the Bremen Council with financial support from the House of Seefahrt. From 1645 to 1648, the Havenhaus was constructed, serving as the official seat of the Vegesack harbor master. In 1741, during the Second Stader Agreement, Vegesack became part of the Electorate of Hanover; however, the harbor and Havenhaus remained permanently under Bremen's jurisdiction. Due to increasing silting of the Weser, most commercial ships could no longer dock in Vegesack. The harbor soon became solely a winter storage and repair location for ships. In 1803, Vegesack returned to Bremen. Since 1835, a bridge has spanned the harbor entrance to the Hafenhöft. Ice flow in 1871 led to the collapse of the embankment of the Höft. The harbor edge had to be constructed and the Lesum straightened.
