The Gymnasium am Steinwald is a secondary school in Neunkirchen with a mathematical-scientific and linguistic branch. It is under the sponsorship of the Neunkirchen district.
With the founding of the Private Family School in 1864 by Carl Ferdinand von Stumm-Halberg, the history of GaS in Neunkirchen began. Separated by gender, girls and boys were trained in two classrooms to attend a higher school. The school location in the then Bahnhofstraße was changed three times until 1887, when the previously private school came under the sponsorship of the then municipality of Neunkirchen: in 1881, it moved into the Viktoria Hospital, in 1884 it changed to the Sprenger house, and from 1886, classes were held in the house of brewery owner Friedrich Schmidt. The Public Parity Girls' School was transformed in 1911, under the leadership of Director Arnold Knoke, into the Public Parity Higher Girls' School.
