The Krawutschke Tower (Krawutschketurm) is a 13 meter high lookout over the Hürtgen Forest on the top of the Burgberg near Bergstein, which was therefore called Hill 400 by the Allies in WWII. On a clear day, the view extends to Cologne Cathedral, but every day the tower gives a panoramic view of the Rursee (reservoir) and the Hurtgen Forest, the area of the Battle im Hurtgenwald (The "Kettel of Aachen")
In 1911 the watchtower was built on the ruins of the former Berenstein Castle, In 1933 a new tower was erected by the Eifel Wanderer Verein and named after the locally famous club member, Franz Krawutschke (1862-1940). The tower, which was also used as a fire watchtower, was badly damaged during World War II and then destroyed by a forest fire in 1945. The reconstruction in 1972 was financed by the municipality of Hürtgenwald, the Eifel Club and the district of Düren.
