The Herford Zoo is a small zoo in the Waldfrieden district of Herford. It was therefore also called Waldfrieden Zoo in the past.
The zoo was founded in 1952 by carpenter Walter Bobel in Schweicheln-Bermbeck. The triggering thought was a small monkey, a white-nosed monkey, which arrived in Schweicheln as a thank you for a Great Dane sent from Africa. A woolly monkey and other, mainly native animals were added and so a small zoo was created. But as early as 1954, the forest property on Stadtholzstraße was leased by the city of Herford and the move to Herford was completed. Now, due to the available space, big game has also been purchased. The cheetah Tilly was hired to participate in the Edgar Wallace film The Gang of Terror, among other things. Until 1975, founder Walter Bobel and his wife Grete ran the Waldfrieden Zoo. Health reasons prompted him to hand over the zoo to a new tenant.
