The Cross of Honour of the entire Princely House of Lippe was instituted on 25 October 1869 by the princes Leopold III of Lippe and Adolf George of Schaumburg-Lippe as a knighthood in the two small principalities.
At the time of its foundation, the Order had three degrees and a gold and silver medal of merit associated with the Order, but on 23 October 1887 it was expanded to an Order of Merit with ten degrees by Leopold's son and successor Woldemar van Lippe and Adolf I George of Schaumburg-Lippe.
