The Order of Leopold of the Principality of Lippe, also known as Lippe-Detmold, was established on 24 July 1906 by Prince Leopold IV of Lippe for "special military and civil merit".
At the time of its foundation, this knighthood had a single degree, but could be awarded with or without a crown. Later, new degrees and decorations were added to this Order. In Germany before the First World War, decorations were very important and the class society of the time felt the need to express the class differences and the complicated etiquette of the royal courts in the decorations.
