Fort Blücher is located opposite the town of Wesel in the Büderich district, where it serves as a bridgehead for the Wesel road bridge over the Rhine.
Fort Blücher was built under the name "Citadelle Napoleon" under Napoléon Bonaparte from 1807 to 1813. After a six-month siege of the fortress of Wesel, the citadel was finally occupied by Prussian troops and later rebuilt with the new direction of battle to the west on the basis of the plans of the fortress engineer Gotthilf Benjamin Keibel. The fort was eventually given its current name after Field Marshal Blücher.
