The plant consists of four parts: the older west I and II, and newer blocks A and B. RWE had a 25% stake in the plant, the largest part was owned by STEAG.
In 2005, a new third chimney, 230 metres high, was put into operation in order to meet the stricter legal requirements for emissions. The old 250-metre-high chimney was taken out of use. Blocks West I and II have a 218-metre-high chimney. The joint cooling tower is 165 m high.
In 2017, the entire plant was shut down.
The decommissioning of the plant is expected to take five to seven years.
