From the Rhine, the Gelsenkirchen lock belongs to the third of the five canal stages of the Rhine-Herne Canal. It is located in Gelsenkirchen shortly before the city harbour of Gelsenkirchen at canal kilometre 23.32 and bridges a height difference of 6.20 m.
The current group of locks was built between 1980 and 1985 and consists of two locks. Both have effective lengths of 190 m. The north lock is designed for a usable width of 12.10 m, while the usable width of the south lock is 11.94 m. It takes 55 seconds to open the upper gate and 35 seconds to open the lower gate.
