In 1850, several independent mining companies were successful in exploratory drilling for coal deposits in the district of Heßler. In 1855, they joined together to form the company Wilhelmine Victoria, based in Gelsenkirchen-Hessler.
In 1856, the sinking of Shaft 1 began on the outskirts of Heßler. Due to the heavily water-bearing overburden, the sinking work proved to be challenging. At times, it had to be interrupted to pump out the infiltrated water.
