The SANAA building is an architecturally innovative university building constructed in 2006 in Essen. Depending on its original purpose and the architects, it is still referred to by the names "Zollverein School," "Zollverein Cube," and "Sanaa Cube."
The building received significant attention in the architectural world and was awarded a prize for "best urban symbolism." At the same time, there has been criticism from the beginning about the lack of usability, high operating costs, and technical deficiencies. Since its construction, no economically viable usage option has been found. The building has already been classified as a refurbishment case less than ten years after its construction. A renovation of the extensive construction damages is planned, but so far no company has been found that is willing to carry out the renovation.
