From the Rhine, the Dorsten locks belong to the third of the six canal stages of the Wesel-Datteln Canal at canal kilometre 30.48 in Dorsten.
The lock group overcomes a height difference of 9.00 meters. Both locks are operated by the lock keepers in the control stations on site, while those of the pumping station are operated by the remote control centre of the Duisburg-Meiderich Water and Shipping Authority in Datteln, which was put into operation in 1984.
