The Mechtenberg Landscape Park is located in Gelsenkirchen with smaller areas in Bochum and Essen. It is 290 hectares in size.
In 1999, the park, which had been redesigned by the Ruhr Area Municipal Association, was handed over to the population. As part of the IBA, the Mechtenberg as the only natural, glacial elevation in the Emscher region, as well as a tailings pile and a former landfill on Nattmannsweg, were upgraded by planting trees along avenues and in afforestation, with orchards, a tree circle and cycling and hiking trails.
